Hunter Thomson won Big Ten Golfer of the Week honors following his runner-up finish at the Border Olympics at the Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas this week. It is Thomson's 6th time receiving the title including the second time so far in his senior year. Border Olympics is an NCAA Division 1 tournament and there were over 80 young men in the competition.
The 4th year student at The University of Michigan, and currently a member of Golf Canada’s Team Canada Amateur Squad, was in a three-way tie for the lead after 36 holes. Following a couple of bogeys and a birdie in the first 13 holes, Thomson nailed 3 straight birdies on 16, 17 and 18 to post a -2 (69) finishing 1 stroke back of Ethan Klose of New Mexico State.
Thomson is currently the second best Canadian amateur golfer based on Men's World Amateur Golf Rankings. Find Canadian Amateur Golf's current male and female top 10 rankings at https://www.canadianamateurgolf.com/canadian-amateur-golf-rankings
Canadian Amateur Golf caught up with Thomson this week and he said "Laredo was always an interesting event for me. My freshman year, it was the worst tournament of my season, and the following two years I could never get anything going. I thought that maybe the course wasn't for me. This year was different, though, because I was able to prove to myself, I could play well on a course that I didn't have the greatest history on. I was able to overcome that mental hurdle, and I felt like that was huge for me."
We also asked what his plans were for the completion of his college career and Thomson responded "For the next few months, I'll be rounding out the college season, with hopes of helping my team make a deep run in the postseason. We've got 4 tournaments left, and I'm super excited!! After that, I can't wait to tee it up in the RBC Canadian open!"
